When Pennsylvania’s senior United States Senator Arlen Specter visited Bedford County he wanted to know what was on the minds of local citizens. He got an earful at both a public forum and a private luncheon co-sponsored by the Bedford County Chamber of Commerce and BCDA.

"Specter will work with the new president and the Democrat-controlled House and Senate, putting the national well-being ahead of party affiliation."

Peppered with questions about nearly every major issue on the national agenda – from alternative energy sources to tax policy – Senator Specter spent more than an hour addressing the concerns of his constituents. Highlights of his remarks included:

  • The nation – especially Congress – has been derelict in dealing with a coherent energy policy.
  • A constitutional amendment for a balanced federal budget is needed.
  • Tax credits for those using alternative fuels should be established.
  • Government has a responsibility to not break promises made to veterans.
  • Border control is an issue that must be addressed in the next administration.
  • Environmental protection needs to be balanced with conservation and exploration.
  • Big ideas need to be debated without rancor and partisanship.
  • People in adjustable mortgages were duped in many cases and a bailout was necessary.
  • The nation needs a fresh look at the healthcare system.
  • He favors a flat tax not a consumption tax. The tax code needs a major overhaul.

Specter will work with the new president and the Democrat-controlled House and Senate, putting the national well being ahead of party affiliation.
