Everyday it's up to Bernie Brown to make sure New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co., Inc.'s Ashcom concrete plant is up and operational. He cleans and greases the machinery, goes over every part of the plant, makes repairs when necessary - or calls in help if he can't fix something, mixes cement to exacting specifications and loads cement trucks. "My job is never boring; there's something new every day." In addition to his duties in the plant, Bernie also fills in where needed - often hopping in a truck and driving a load of concrete to a job himself. Bernie says his 25 years on the job allows him to easily move from task to task. He's worked in four NES&L plants during that time - Roaring Spring, McConnellstown, Canoe Creek and for the last 12 years at Ashcom.

Over the years he's learned to operate a computer, earned his commercial driver's license, learned to interact with the customers and coworkers. "I feel fortunate to have found a job I like that allowed me to stay in Bedford County with a company that has always treated me well. A resident of Pavia, Bernie says he likes the community and can't imagine living anywhere else. "Everybody here has an opportunity to make something of their lives if they work at it," he says. "The county's a great place to live; a great place to raise kids."
