Lynn
Weyant wears many hats in his role as co-owner of Weyants' TV in Everett. Lynn
and his brother Brian own and operate the family business which was started
by their parents, Denver and Doris Weyant in 1969. After graduating from Everett
Area High School in 1977, Lynn completed a 24-month electronics and computer
course at Penn Tech Electronics in Pittsburgh to prepare him to move into the
business. Today Lynn handles much of the sales and repairs, and he says he likes
the variety - some days he's on the road doing in-home repairs; other days he's
in the shop. The business has changed over the years. "There's a lot tougher
competition in sales; far less in service. There are fewer places to get repairs
than in the past." Weyant says offering a full-service solution is the
primary way his company competes with large, discount retail outlets. "We
can do anything a customer might need that relates to televisions - sales, service
on anything we sell, hooking up the television, installing satellite service.
The customers aren't left hanging - they're not left on their own." Lynn
attends training every year to keep his skills current with new technology.
"I've always liked puzzles and problem-solving, so I like the challenge
of repairs," he says. "I learn something new in this business every
day, which makes it fun." One aspect of co-owning a business that isn't
as enviable is the long hours. "We probably work an average of 55 hours
a week - and that would be a good week," he says. "The long hours
are definitely the worst aspect of being a business owner. You don't really
realize how many hours you work until you sit down and analyze it. Being a business
owner isn't a career for someone who doesn't want to work hard."
